Rome, Ga.- In commemoration of their 30th anniversary as the Riverkeeper of the upper Coosa River basin, Coosa River Basin Initiative (CRBI) proudly announces the launch of a campaign aimed at educating the community about the detrimental effects of microplastics on freshwater ecosystems and public health.
As a part of the microplastics campaign CRBI will co-host a ‘River Junk Sculpture’ class with Kingfisher Art Co. on November 2nd. The workshop will allow participants to make sculptures using plastic collected from river clean ups that CRBI held throughout the Summer. The sculptures will be displayed at a membership event that CRBI will host at Kingfisher Art Co. on Thursday, November 16th. The community is encouraged to join.
Microplastics, minute particles of plastic measuring less than five millimeters in size, have emerged as a critical environmental concern. They pervade our rivers, lakes, and streams, posing a significant threat to aquatic life and potentially endangering human health through the food chain.
In partnership with International Paper, CRBI is embarking developing effective methods for measuring microplastics within the Upper Coosa River basin. This groundbreaking initiative, made possible through the generous support of International Paper’s grant, underscores CRBI’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the Coosa River and its surrounding communities.
Through educational content and community events, CRBI aims to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to find solutions to the proliferation of microplastics. By fostering a culture of environmental stewardship, CRBI aspires to preserve the vitality and health of the Coosa River for generations to come.
