PFAS ANNOUNCEMENT! 🚫 CRBI procured funding to begin comprehensive PFAS chemical testing in Coosa River basin. 💧

We know that many waterways in Northwest Georgia are contaminated by PFAS and similar chemicals from upstream manufacturers but we still don’t know the extent of the pollution.

We are collaborating with @coosariverkeeper in Alabama to test sites on the Coosa River downstream and a company out of California, Cyclopure, to test for the chemical. 🙌

Say hello to the Bluestripe Shiner! These little guys are considered rare in Georgia because of habitat degradation and impoundment of streams but can be found in our river basin in flowing areas of large creeks and medium-sized rivers over rocky substrates. The average adult is only around 3.5 inches long 🐟 Have you seen these little fish around the river basin?

BREAKING NEWS 💧 EPA released announced the prop

BREAKING NEWS 💧 EPA released announced the proposed National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR) for six PFAS chemicals. The proposed PFAS NPDWR does not require any actions until it is finalized. EPA anticipates finalizing the regulation by the end of 2023. EPA expects that if fully implemented, the rule will prevent thousands of deaths and reduce tens of thousands of serious PFAS-attributable illnesses.

TAKE ACTION NOW 💧 It only takes a few seconds to tell the EPA to why you oppose the draft permit that would allow Twin Pines Minerals LLC to put a 8,000 acre heavy mineral sand mine at the doorstep of the Okefenokee. Overwhelming scientific evidence shows the dangers of this mining operation:

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and respected scientists have repeatedly warned that the mine will likely affect the hydrology of the swamp, causing irreversible damage and increasing the likelihood of severe drought.

The U.S. Secretary of the Interior has warned of the impact the mine will have.

The mining operations could devastate the swamp's ecological integrity by increasing the frequency of drought that could lead to catastrophic fires burning the ancient peat beds-releasing enormous amounts of CO2 into the air.

The first phase of this harmful mine will eliminate over 300 acres of valuable wetlands, withdraw millions of gallons of groundwater, and release air, noise, and light pollution into the refuge, which is an International Dark Sky Park.

The operation is also likely to discharge wastewater into the St. Marys River basin.

The company offers an experimental plan with NO defensible assurances that their mining operations will protect the Okefenokee Swamp from permanent damage, protect endangered species, or safeguard the long-term interest of the people who depend on that environment for recreation and economic opportunities.

This is the Frecklebelly madtoms, a small and rare catfish that recently received federal protection. These little fish (their max size is 3.75 inches) are found in the Upper Coosa River. Their federal protection status will enable the fish and the habitat that supports them to be protected. 🙌

WHAT IS SWIM GUIDE?

The CRBI River Swim Guide is a weekly bacteriological monitoring program that monitors popular recreation areas in our river basin to determine if it is safe to swim. The goal of this program is to protect public health, execute best practices in the field and in the lab, and improve water quality and enjoy ourselves while doing so! We want people to be well informed and feel safe when they get outdoors to enjoy their summer. This is why each Thursday & Friday from Memorial Day until Labor Day we are dedicated to testing water quality.

Many states are beginning to regulate PFAS, looking to eliminate their usage in order to to protect the public’s health from these dangerous chemicals and maintain access to important markets.

In the US, 20 states are now regulating PFAS in fire fighting foam, and 10 states have banned PFAS in food packaging. You can learn more about which states are regulating PFAS on our blog at coosa.org, linked in our bio.
