Freshwater mussels are integral to clean water. They have been called the ‘livers of the rivers’ because of their vital role in filtering algae, plankton, detritus, bacteria, and toxins out of the water. Even though they aren’t moving around much, they are moving lots of important debris out of our watersheds. For reference, a single adult mussel filters more than 1 liter of water per hour!

Mussels stabilize the silt and sand on the bottom of the river and provide oxygenated water and habitat for smaller aquatic organisms.

As if that weren’t enough- they’re also an important part of the food chain. Mussels provide food for larger mammals and also for aquatic insects who feed off of their biodeposits (mussel poo). In turn, the aquatic insects that feed off these bio deposits are food for fish in the watershed.

Without freshwater mussels the ecosystem and the food chain quickly breaks down.

This is why CRBI has made the conservation of our freshwater mussels a priority by working with community partners to re-establish endangered fresh water mussel species in Holly Creek of Northwest Georgia.

In 1578 Spanish explorer Cebeza de Vacas wrecked his ship on Galveston Island on modern day Texas coast. De Vacas noted that the indigenous people of that land harvested from a “River of Nuts”. Any guess what nut was floating down the river?

It was a pecan!

Pecan trees love to grow near rivers and in flood plains. They grow all along rivers throughout the South East including the Mississippi and its tributaries.

The pecan trees entire life cycle revolves around the levels of rain fall and the quality of the water. If there is too much or too little rain in the previous year it will affect nut production and if there was too much or too little in the growth year the nuts quality is impacted.

Have you seen me growing around the Upper Coosa?

Have you seen me growing around the Upper Coosa? This native wildflower has an interesting name- Rattle Snake Master (Eryngium yuccifolium)

It is well loved by insects in our area. Monarch butterflies, skippers, and other butterflies enjoy the nectar of the RattleSnake Master. While soldier beetles enjoy eating the pollen. Other pollinators of this plant include bees, wasps, and flies.

This is one of the native species we had the honor of helping to plant at Park Creek Elementary school early this Spring in a riparian buffer by Mill Creek.

The riparian buffer was planted with over 8,000 native plant species and will help protect and restore this vulnerable waterway. The native plants will also provide habitat for native wildlife and food for pollinators like the at risk monarch butterfly. Even more, it will serve the dual purpose of an educational space for students and the community to learn about our region’s ecology. 🐠

It's not fun when a river you love is nominated as endangered, but the Coosa River has gained that nomination by @americanrivers for 2022. While its not the sort of news we want to share about our watershed, the hard truth is that our clean water is under threat from agricultural pollution and an array of man made pollutants. We are thankful for organizations like American Rivers who do their best to bring awareness to this fundamental challenge facing the future of humanity- who will keep our fresh water drinkable, swimmable, and fishable? We all play a part- thank you for playing yours 💧

Our rivers are at risk of long term pollution. Mi

Our rivers are at risk of long term pollution. Millions of tons of toxic coal ash are stored in unsafely in unlined pits around Georgia. This waste, left over from burning coal, contains toxins like arsenic, mercury, lead and chromium. The way it is currently stored poses serious risks of contamination to ground water and waterways!

In January, US EPA warned the Georgia Environmental Protection Division that it wasn’t doing enough to regulate storage of this toxic waste, and that it should not be permanently stored in unlined pits mixing with groundwater.

There is legislation in the Georgia Senate right now proposing longer-term monitoring of groundwater near coal ash. HB 647 would require 50 years of groundwater monitoring around these coal ash storage pits. It is the least we can do. Urge your Senator to support HB 647.
